Old Fortress

The spectacular Old Fortress is the most famous among Corfu’s castles and fortresses. This fortress played a vital role regarding defense strategies in the past. In order to enter the Fortress you have to cross a road over a deep moat, the so – called Contra Fossa. Highlights in the fortress include the Church of St. George, while nowadays the Old Fortress houses Corfu’s Public Library, the University of Music Studies and a Museum with Byzantine Collections. Finally, concerts of famous artists and exhibitions take usually place inside the fortress.
